[Job Offer] Tenure-Track Position Opening at JAMSTEC on Marine Plastic Research

06 November 2025

IMDOS is pleased to share that JAMSTEC - the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology is currently recruiting a tenure-track researcher who can lead research on the following themes related to marine plastic pollution.

With a focus on plastic-derived carbon as a form of allochthonous carbon in the ocean, and JAMSTEC is conducting studies to elucidate its dynamics.

JAMSTEC is therefore looking for a researcher to take a leading role in oceanographic studies targeting nanoplastics and tire wear particles. The role will primarily involve accurately quantifying these particles in the marine environment, evaluating their impact on ecosystems and biogeochemical cycles, and developing predictive models for future scenarios.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the following duties:
1. Quantifying the distribution of nanoplastics and tire wear particles in the ocean, based on approaches from environmental analytical chemistry and related approaches.
2. Evaluating their impact on ecosystem and elucidating their links to carbon cycling, including through microbial responses.
3. Conducting modeling studies to support future projections and contributing research results to international databases.
